Lynne Blackburn

Paula Wyatt

"Fortune Teller"
Installation from glass and folded diary pages

A piece of moulded windos glass houses small fortune tellers made from pages of the artist's diary in her thriteenth year. The pages selected refer to aprticular boys in her class at school. In the diary she often speculates about who she will end up with and what she will be like when she does grow up…

Katja Rosenberg
"Sina, the Good Old Soul"
Linoprint

Looking after after her little horse and exploring the forest on horseback hours on end is the artist's greatest memory of being thirteen years old.

Will Parker
"Rick'n'Roses"
Acrylics, digital print, pen

The artist remembers his musical taste changing drastically. Despite loving the new music he still couldn't relate to the immorality these new musicians promoted, he wrestled with this dichotomy, but he assures us he is alright now.

Roger Huddle
"Buddy & Me '59"
Photography and digital graphics

At thirteen the artist began his life long affair with music…

Roger Huddle
"Tuesday & Me '59"

"Between the Black and White Lines II"
Photocopy on acetate

Through text and image the artists created a dialogue about perception. The work explores how they feel they are perceived by others and, in contrast, presents how they would like to be perceived. They borrowed ideas from traditional stained glass windows referencing the work of William Morris. With Walthamstow being Morris’ birthplace, the group felt this was an ideal opportunity for a contemporary homage.

"Between the Black and White Lines I"
Acrylic on canvas

The group portrait explores identity. The silhouetted forms reveal traces of human presence. Each silhouette represents the life of a 13 year old. Although very real, the simplistic uniform style of each portrait gives an element of anonymity to each of the artists allowing them to express their inner thoughts and feelings. The text is taken from personal diaries kept over a 4-day period. What you read are snippets of personal dialogue that the artist has chosen to present to you. Collectively, the canvas panels reveal a snapshot of teenage life today.

Stewart Taylor
"Don't drop me off right outside"
Screenprint and acrylics

Don't drop me off right outside - a throwaway comment from the artist's partner's youngest at the very age of thirteen. It stuck in the mind as a poignant reminder of the embarrassment we felt towards our parents; all part of our attempts to rebel, find our own private identity and begin our journey as independent beings.

Patricia Willock
"The Glasscutters"
Extract from a novel written at the age of 13

When the artist was 13, life was writing. She used to send letters to her friend Julie who lived down the road. They both liked glitter, sparkle and Duran Duran.

The artist liked spraying her letters with perfume. So her piece was presented as she would have when she was 13. Tragically, the internet does not yet capture smells.
