Grandad's Island is a well known and successful illustrated book, written and illustrated by Walthamstow's very own Benji Davies, and translated into 35 languages. The book tells of Sid, a little boy and his and his Grandad's trip to a beautiful island inhabited by many, many healthy, happy creatures who they befriend. Grandad explains to Sid that he will stay on the island and after a long hug, Sid steers the big ship home by himself, filled by his Grandad's love and the adventures they shared.

As part of Waltham Forest Borough of Culture 2019, Walthamstow art initiators Artillery are running a broad series of activities, workshops and events inspired by the book, called Grandad's Island - from page to pavement, taking part all across the Borough, with particular focus on the dates 4-13 October 2019, when there will be a grand finale day at Langthorne Park in Leyton.
One of the species that is particularly happy on Grandad's Island are the parakeets, which the author was inspired to include due to watch the London parakeets outside his window. As a response to the parakeets featured in the book, Artillery has commissioned Art Catcher Ltd to run an exhibition inspired by local as well as imagined birds at Hale End Library in Highams Park. Over 30 artists from in- and outside the borough have contributed with birds created from a broad range of materials and sources of inspiration to form the exhibition THE HALE END BIRD SANCTUARY. We look forward to welcoming you there.
