Beginners welcome. Dance has always been significant in the lives of Native Americans as both a common amusement and a solemn duty. Many dances played a vital role in religious rituals and other ceremonies; while others were held to guarantee the success of hunts, harvests, giving thanks, and other celebrations. This workshop will explore the combination of the powerful legwork of Native American Dance with the improvisational characteristic of modern dance. Experimental and creative in our approach, we will compare the unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction, set against the fast paced, colourful, and highly energetic, athletic movements of Native American Dance. Information: [email protected] 4 Feb, 3-5pm Fantasy Buildings by Kate Hardy Free, donations welcome This is a workshop making buildings which subvert tradition. Generate ideas for your invented building with a surreal drawing game, then make your own collage building with found colour and texture. A fun workshop for all ages from 2 to 102. Information: [email protected] 5 Feb, 2-4pm Papermaking and Letterwriting by Helen Porter (Papermaker to E17) and Katja Rosenberg Free, donations welcome Make paper the traditional way, by hand, using recycled paper, plant fibre and cloth pulp. Prepare to get your hands wet! Paper is made by dipping a mould (screen in a wooden frame) into a vat of paper and water. The cellulose fibres are attracted to each other and form a sheet, which is couched (laid down on a sheet of fabric). The water is squeezed out of the paper, and there will be wet sheets you may take home. There will be dry paper we made earlier so you can finish the session by writing a nice letter to surprise someone who has not heard from you for a while. Stamps can be purchased. Information: [email protected] 5 Feb, 4-6pm Traditional Woodcarving by Daniel Turner Free, donations welcome The Gypsy wagon (of which there will be one on show) has for hundreds of years been the symbol of Gypsy art and culture. The wagons are carved, painted and gilded. Traditional carving includes fruit and flowers which are often richly painted. Other parts of the wagons are carved to reduce weight while retaining the strength of the wood. In this workshop we will look at the continuing tradition of Gypsy carving and try our hand at carving some of the more iconic motifs of in this tradition. We will be using undercutting and a variety of other techniques to build up a carving. To help facilitate this, the workshop will use soap rather than wood to allow a piece to be completed. From Contrade’s of Medieval Siena to Victorian streets of Bow, we want to explore what makes you feel you belong. These tales could be current or historical. What bound us together as a community and still does? The RRNF believes current and past traditions should inform future city making. We therefore ask all the participants to bring a tradition, a memory or ritual, (in the form of text, a picture, an object etc...), which they believe should be kept safe and could inform future change. From there we will build up together an archive of local messages, traditions and important moments, which will be included in the public works installation and will be used by the RRNF in future meetings. Ancestral Whispers
by Vanessa Downie of Ajos Dance
Free, donations welcome
This solo, entitled Ancestral Whispers, was commissioned by Art Catcher Ltd and developed during a residency at Space@ Clarence Mews. This is a powerful, emotive, intricate and personal piece inspired by Vanessa’s newfound native American heritage. From an anthropological and philosophical standpoint, the piece explores ways in which the legacy of America’s indigenous people impacts Vanessa’s life in the present day, and acknowledges her changing attitudes relating to the connection with the spirit of her Great Grandmother, now viewed as a precious gift... as opposed to once being an unsettling source of fear.
