Rebellion Student of the late seventies and still angry. My repeat pattern wallpaper designs are inspired by Pugin, Strummer, Jamie Reid, Ickey, Banksy, Orwell and Delia Smith CBE. ‘Rebellion’ takes Pugin’s wallpaper as inspiration and mixes the colours of punk with the theories of Icke and Ian’s personal symbolism, mottos and icons. Under The Table My work is about the memories and history embedded within familiar places and buildings - the human traces left behind in buildings, and on everyday objects, from the visual traces to subconscious and psychological ones. I'm interested in how the fabric of a building, and the objects within it, show and mark the passing of time and how, by recording traces of personal memory, a sense of a broader social and historical memory is evoked. Klecksographien This piece alludes to the moment between sleep and consciousness when the mind can play wonderful games with the half recognised shapes and images that surround our beds, taking inspiration from the Swiss game that involves the dropping of ink on one-half of a piece of white paper and folding to reveal forms from which participants can create imagery and narratives. Here a pen is provided for the audience to apply their pareidoliac tendencies and draw into the wallpaper to reveal a unique interpretation of the imagery depicted. Building Blocks Building Blocks Wallpaper is a site-specific wallpaper design, charting routes from three different underground stations to DREAMSPACE, an art, design & architect gallery in London. The trajectories were stiched over pleated paper printed with burnt dust, and then exploded to disrupt the pathway to depict how buildings block the direct passage of travel. The viewer is invited to interact by adding or subtracting visual and textual blocks relating to the space on architecture, to build their own narrative. This is a variation on the theme of a series of award winning artist books touring the USA, Europe, Australia & Seoul. Work for sale, please email [email protected] 07803 936 892 www.sumiperera.com |

Shoreditch Toile This Shoreditch Toile is inspired by the designs of Timorous Beasties, with their London Toile and Glasgow Toile, combined with my observations of Shoreditch, near where I live. It takes the Toile de Jouy design convention, which originated in France in the 1700s and depicted idyllic pastoral scenes on upholstery and wallpaper, and updates it to depict scenes from a contemporary urban landscape, in the manner of Timorous Beasties' designs.
